Waterfalls and mountain lakes of the Zagros

In the Zagros, Lorestan places waterfalls and mountain lakes alongside evidence of early human settlement. The UNESCO-listed prehistoric sites of the Khorramabad Valley comprise five caves and one rock shelter; Falak-ol-Aflak Castle shapes the city’s historic skyline.

Bisheh Waterfall, Gahar Lake and the Oshtornkuh heights offer different routes into the province’s landscapes. Borujerd’s nickel-silver metalwork and carpets, together with Luri music, textiles and local food, add a cultural dimension to the journey.

Falak-ol-Aflak

On a hill at the centre of Khorramabad, Falak-ol-Aflak Castle commands the city and river with round towers and brick walls. It served administrative, military and prison functions in different eras; today its archaeology and anthropology museums introduce the history and culture of Lorestan.

Bisheh Waterfall

Beside a mountain village and Dorud railway station, Bisheh Waterfall drops from high cliffs into the Sezar River. The historic rail journey through the Zagros, oak woodland, springs and the growing sound of water make the approach an essential part of the experience.

Gahar Lake

At about 2,400 metres in the protected Oshtorankuh range, Gahar Lake is fed by melting snow and mountain springs. Clear water, rocky and sandy shores and surrounding peaks reward the fairly long approach on foot with a landscape of serene grandeur.

Khorramabad Bridges

Across one of Lorestan’s historic routes, Kashkan Bridge spans a river valley on massive stone piers and tall arches. A Kufic inscription dates its construction to the late fourth century AH. Even in partial ruin, its length and strength speak of skilled builders and the importance of Zagros communications.

Lili Strait

Lili Strait is a narrow rocky gorge near Dorud through which clear mountain water flows. High walls, smooth erosion-shaped rock and natural pools give it a distinctive adventurous character.
