Zagros gorges and the traces of Seimareh

Image source · Wikimedia CommonsTaher Partow · CC BY-SA 4.0

Ilam extends across the western Zagros, from wooded heights to warmer plains. In the provincial capital, Vali Castle and Falahati Palace preserve Qajar-era architecture, while Razianeh and Arghavan gorges reveal another side of the landscape.

Routes through the province connect Seimareh’s historic remains with Dehloran’s hot springs and Abdanan’s twin Siyahgav lakes. Raised-pattern kilims and Ehrami textiles introduce local crafts shaped by rural and nomadic life.

Razianeh Gorge

Razianeh Gorge is a distinctive geological landscape in Ilam. Its narrow passage, high walls and winding floor were carved by prolonged water erosion through limestone layers, clearly revealing the shaping force of erosion in a semi-arid mountain setting.

Arghavan Gorge

Near the city of Ilam, Arghavan Valley glows in spring with the pink and purple blossom of Judas trees. A river, springs, oaks and green slopes give the valley one of the Zagros Mountains’ most delicate faces. The flowering season is brief, and the finest way to enjoy it is without picking or damaging the branches.

Seimareh Ancient City

The ancient city of Seimareh is one of western Iran’s major archaeological settlements. Remains of domestic and public buildings, street lines and excavated objects illuminate urban life in the late Sasanian and early Islamic periods.

Chamalan Waterfall

Chamalan Waterfall is a seasonal feature of Ilam’s mountain landscape. Its stronger spring flow descends rocky slopes among Zagros oak woodland and open valleys.
