East Azerbaijan

From Tabriz’s bazaar to the monasteries of the Aras

East Azerbaijan preserves a major Silk Road trading centre in Tabriz’s historic bazaar. Its brick passages, the Blue Mosque’s tilework and the Constitutional House reveal different chapters of the city’s history and architecture.

Outside Tabriz, Kandovan’s rock-cut homes, Arasbaran’s forests and the Aras valley change the scenery. St. Stepanos Monastery near Jolfa and Maragheh’s monuments turn a provincial journey into a route through urban heritage, religious architecture and mountain landscapes.

Tabriz Bazaar

Tabriz Bazaar is a living network of covered lanes, trading courts, caravanserais, mosques and brick-built schools. The city’s position on east–west routes made the complex a centuries-old centre for exchanging goods, ideas and cultures. Inscribed as World Heritage in 2010, the bazaar remains woven into the economic and social life of Tabriz.

Blue Mosque

A survivor of the fifteenth-century Mozaffariyeh complex, the Blue Mosque earned the title “Turquoise of the Islamic World” for its lapis and turquoise tilework. A major eighteenth-century earthquake left the building gravely damaged, yet surviving fragments and later restoration still reveal an exquisite command of colour, calligraphy and geometry.

Kandovan

On the slopes of Sahand, Kandovan remains an inhabited village of homes carved into cone-shaped rock formations. Local guesthouses, honey and handwoven textiles connect its architecture with everyday rural life. It was selected for Best Tourism Villages by UN Tourism in 2023.

El Goli

In south-eastern Tabriz, El Goli is a historic pool with a central pavilion and surrounding garden. Originating in the Aq Qoyunlu era, the reservoir was enlarged under the Safavids and later became a public promenade. The pavilion reflected in the water—especially at sunset as the lights appear—is one of the city’s enduring images.

St. Stepanos Monastery

Set in a mountain valley near Jolfa and the Aras River, St Stepanos is among Iran’s most distinguished Armenian monuments. Carved stone reliefs, a conical dome and an enclosed courtyard reveal Armenian architectural tradition in conversation with Persian art. Since 2008, the monastery has formed part of UNESCO’s Armenian Monastic Ensembles of Iran.
