Bushehr

Port-town stories on the Persian Gulf

Image source · Wikimedia CommonsReza Mirzadegan · CC BY-SA 4.0Photograph cropped

Bushehr’s courtyard houses and wooden shanashir balconies recall the Persian Gulf’s trading networks. Along the coast, Siraf reveals an earlier maritime past; inland, Borazjan’s caravanserai is part of UNESCO’s Persian Caravanserai property.

A provincial journey connects ports, Dashtestan’s date groves and salt landscapes. Fish dishes, dates and local music bring coastal life into focus. Autumn and winter offer more comfortable conditions for exploring this hot region.

Old Bushehr

Bushehr’s historic quarter occupies the northern tip of a triangular peninsula and encompasses the Dehdashti, Shenbadi, Kuti and Behbahani neighbourhoods. Multi-storey houses, central courtyards, wooden doors and windows, and shanashir balconies designed to channel the breeze form a distinctive architecture adapted to the Persian Gulf climate. Walking these lanes recalls an era when Bushehr was one of Iran’s principal maritime gateways.

Bandar Kangan

Bandar Kangan is a historic port town on Bushehr Province’s Persian Gulf coast. Its shoreline, fishing boats and everyday waterfront life reveal the province’s living maritime culture.

Rais Ali Delvari House

The house of Rais Ali Delvari in the town of Delvar is now a museum devoted to his life and struggle. During the First World War, he emerged as a leading figure in southern Iran’s resistance to British forces. The house’s modest architecture, documents, weapons and surviving objects introduce visitors to an important chapter in Bushehr’s modern history and the independent spirit of the people of Tangestan.

Siraf

Siraf is one of Iran’s most important historic ports on the Persian Gulf. From the Sasanian era through the early Islamic centuries, it served as a vital maritime link between Iran, India, China, East Africa and other distant lands. Architectural remains, a rock-cut cemetery and the dramatic meeting of mountain and sea evoke the port’s prosperous past. Siraf is also included on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List.

Naiband Bay

Near Asaluyeh, Nayband National Marine Park brings together sandy beaches, sheltered bays, mangrove forests, coastal cliffs and rich marine habitats. Dolphins, sea turtles and migratory birds are among its best-known inhabitants. As Iran’s first national marine park, Nayband offers a vivid introduction to the natural diversity of the Persian Gulf coast.
